Why I'm Running
Read The AnnouncementI’m running for governor to make sure that California keeps rising – that we’re building our economy while working hard to protect your rights and freedoms in the state we love.
California has the fifth largest economy in the world. We’re the economic engine for the country. Folks have always had a shot at the American Dream here.
My parents didn’t go to college, but they had steady jobs and they always had work. They bought a home, raised four kids, and were able to retire in dignity.
But today, we’re facing an affordability crisis. Homes and rent are too expensive. Folks can barely cover their grocery bills. Healthcare costs are incredibly high.
This is a break-glass moment – for our families, our neighbors, and folks all across our great state.
We have to fight to make it possible for all of us to have that California Dream, and that’s why I’m running for Governor.
I took on Donald Trump – and won the fight to protect the Affordable Care Act for our families. I took on Big Pharma – and won the battle to lower prescription drug costs. I took on COVID – and we won. Now, it’s time to take on our state’s biggest problems and deliver for California.
Meet Xavier

Xavier Becerra and his spouse, Dr. Carolina Reyes, are both children of working-class families and first-generation college graduates. Like their parents, they understood that their biggest obligation was to teach their three daughters to reach a better place and improve the condition of the next generation.
Becerra has spent 35 years serving California, from the State Assembly to the U.S. Congress, as California’s Attorney General and the United States Secretary of Health and Human Services.
Throughout his career, he’s focused on one thing: Delivering for Californians.
As a member of Congress, Becerra saw just how many folks needed access to quality, affordable healthcare and worked hard to pass the Affordable Care Act (ACA), extending coverage to millions of Californians.
As Attorney General, Becerra led the charge against the Trump Administration’s unlawful actions as they threatened our rights and freedoms — taking Trump to court 122 times, and winning most lawsuits on behalf of California families.
And as United States Secretary of Health and Human Services, Becerra lowered Californians’ costs by negotiating down prescription drug prices for the first time in American history.
Now, he’s running for Governor to help California build, protect our California way of life, and make sure California rises beyond the chaos in Washington.
Here's the California Dream I'm Proposing

Xavier Becerra was raised by a construction worker and a clerical worker, neither of whom had a chance to go to college. They were able to buy a house, own a home, send the four Becerra kids to college or the military – then set aside enough to retire in dignity. That should be the case today for any hardworking family in California. That is the California Dream – and it’s become out of reach for too many.
If you put in a full day’s work, we’re going to make sure you’re paid a livable wage.
If you’re trying to start a new business and create jobs in California, we’re going to cut the red tape and make sure that you can launch your business with a partner in the state government.
If you’re raising a family, we’re going to get prices down to make sure you can afford childcare, your rent or your mortgage, and eggs and fresh produce at the grocery store.
And if you’re working hard to give those kids a future, we’re going to invest in local law enforcement to make sure they’re safe in school, you’re safe at home and work, and our cities and towns are safe places where we can all thrive.
